Gobeklitepe is located in Şanlıurfa province of Turkey and is the most ancient site built by cults. Dating back to 12.000 years ago, Gobeklitepe contains 2 “T-shaped” pillars, each of which is up to 5 meters in length, and situated between 20 circular and oval structures, each with a diameter up to 30 meters. Gobeklitepe is the oldest monument in such a size and it can be said that it dates back to the beginning of history. Thanks to the enrichment of temples with animist figures reflecting the prehistoric belief systems, Gobeklitepe is characterized as one of the most remarkable findings of archeological history. Taking all these into account in the light of monumental architecture revealed as a result of excavation, Gobeklitepe is deemed not only unique but also special. In this respect, it had initially been included in UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List and was successively inscribed on the permanent list in 2018.
